Nexa Racing AX-07 — black-and-lime carbon livery

NEXA // RACING TEAM

A student-led engineering squad designing, milling and racing CO₂-powered miniature F1 cars down a 20-metre strip of tarmac — where a thousandth of a second is the difference between a trophy and a reset button.

Numbers
don't blink.

A car measured in grams, driven by gas pressure, and judged in thousandths. Every component is a negotiation between aerodynamic drag, structural weight, and cold-start CO₂ thrust. These are the numbers we keep returning to.

CURRENT RACE CAR · SEASON 02 Aether X-07 "Locust"
Side profile of the Nexa Racing AX-07 F1 race car
Front Wing Primary Aerofoil · 3-Element First surface to meet the air. Splits flow above the floor and below the chassis — defines every vortex downstream.
Front Tire Composite Wheel · 2.1g 3D-printed PLA hub with CNC-machined urethane tire. Bearing pre-load tuned per run.
Nose & Monocoque Milled Balsa-Composite Single billet, one-pass CNC. 0.35mm wall at the apex. Carries the entire chassis load through the driver cell.
Halo & Driver Cell Safety Cage · Mandatory Regulation-required roll structure. The driver figurine must be fully enclosed — a rulebook constraint, not a styling choice.
CO₂ Chamber 8g Cartridge Bay · 8.25 bar Seated directly above the centre of mass. Pierced at T-0. Peak thrust at 40ms, exhausted by 180ms.
Side Pod Thermal Fairing Shrouds the CO₂ reaction bay. Surface optimised to keep flow attached all the way to the rear axle.
Venturi Floor Ground-Effect Channels Underfloor tunnels accelerate airflow to generate low-pressure downforce — zero drag penalty.
Rear Tire Drive Wheel · Tether-Guided Low-friction PTFE eyelets route the tether through the rear axle. Lateral tolerance: ±0.02mm.
Rear Wing Laminar Profile · 12° AoA CFD-optimised for minimum induced drag. Reduces rear-end vortex shedding by 14% vs. stock geometry.

From napkin sketch
to finish line.

A full season compresses the real engineering loop — research, CAD, simulation, manufacture, test, iterate — into six public milestones. Here is ours, in order.

01 · R&D
Research
Tear apart last season's telemetry. Re-read the regulations cover-to-cover. Map every gram, every mm, and every margin the rulebook still leaves unclaimed.
Phase 01Sept
02 · CAD
Design
Fusion 360 from the first datum. Parametric body, swappable wings, driver-customisable ballast. Every revision is versioned, tagged, and stress-tested on paper before it touches a mill.
Phase 02Oct
03 · CFD
Simulate
Wind-tunnel virtualisation at 30 m/s. We chase laminar flow along the upper shell and trap turbulence in the pod wake, not the rear wing.
Phase 03Nov
04 · CNC
Manufacture
One billet. One pass. A 3-axis CNC strips 83% of the block away in 42 minutes. Hand-finish, paint, apply livery — all in-house.
Phase 04Jan
05 · LAB
Test
A 20m indoor track. High-speed capture @ 960fps. Every run is logged, every failure is a datum. We hunt hundredths, not tenths.
Phase 05Feb
06 · GO
Race
National heats. Regional finals. One cartridge, twenty metres, no second chances. Then — repeat.
Phase 06Mar

No sanctioned runs yet. The lab is loud, the mill is warm, and the first heat is on the horizon.

Season starting soon.

We're still in the workshop — milling, simulating, and shaving grams off the AX-07. Race times will land here as soon as the lights go green.
